I am 72 yrs old and just learning how to make a quilt. Can you tell me what would be a good block to make for a baby quilt. Thanks so much for your help.

Mary, there are so many blocks in the quilting world, it can be really hard to choose. I suggest something really easy like an Irish chain or 9 patch.

Many people make an I Spy quilt for little ones from colorful print scraps. That would be big squares or rectangles with sashing in between.

The easiest may be Rail Fence. It depends on how many colors you want to use.

Quilt magazine and Quick Quilts are probably the best bets for the beginning quilter because their instructions are really good, and the patterns are simpler. You can pick them up at Walmart and many other places.

Lastly, I started quilting with a book called Your First Quilt Book by Carol Doak. It has a few simple pattern to get started with. Not overwhelming.

    Good Luck!

Nine patch makes a cute and colorful quilt. You can use all the same colors or use scraps for a more colorful look. the just quilt in the ditch and you're done! Good beginner quilt. And with a nine patch it's easy to make it as big or as small as you want just by making more or less blocks. If you wanted to drss it up, add sashing (strips betwen the blocks) Post a picture when you're done.

I just completed the top for a Baby Quilt, my first in a very long time. In fact, I "bought" a pattern on E Bay not knowing that soooo many patterns are available online for free. I would be glad to copy the pattern and send it to you. It was easy and very satisfying to see the top go together. Yardage needed was also indicatated which was helpful to me, a beginner. Good luck to you and e mail me if you can use the pattern.

The first baby quilt I did was just 5 inch blocks I used pink, lavender, blue, yellow, and a green pastels and 1 print ( had small heart in those colors also had it with stars) in soft flannel. I alternated the blocks then made a wide border with either pink or blue. I also use the multi color pastel ricrac and placed on the seam of edge of quilt and border. for the backing I used the print Made a very soft and warm quilt
