On my own tops I square the top before adding borders, measure for borders, sew them in place and square again after the quilt is quilted but before adding binding. As a longarm quilter, I really, really dislike borders that do not fit!

Be sure it's square before adding borders. "Square it up" by adjusting seams between the blocks and within blocks if necessary. I've lucked out in that mine have always been square before adding borders. But I have seen some from block exchanges where some of the blocks weren't the same size as others. But this normally has to be fixed while sewing the blocks together, and then, hopefully, the quilt will be square before adding borders. Small differences in lengths should be eased in when adding the borders.
