    I would suggest using 1" or 1 1/4" strips folded in half then stitched to the quilt. I've used a flange on a couple large quilts and it gave them a little more dimension and an extra touch.

    I cut mine either 1-1/2" or 1-1/4". I really like how it adds another easy looking border either before adding the borders or with the binding.

    There's instructions for adding a flange, not video, but photos from a quilter's blog, as I recall. You can google "adding flange to a quilt" and find it. She recommends 7/8 inch strip or 3/4 inch. I cut mine 7/8, I think, then folded it and pressed it. It was wide enough but I found it very difficult to keep the exposed amount of flange consistent all around the quilt. I'm sure there's a way to do it easily, I just couldn't seem to find it.
