Default Advice on flannel and terry cloth!!

I am making a baby quilt and need advice. Would it be okay to cut these 3 fabrics into squares for a quilt? Your advice is appreciated! TIA! Nancy

Love the flannel. How heavy is the terry cloth? It would make very bulky seams so maybe ok for backing. I don't think I would want to piece with it.

Don't forget that terry cloth can get little picks and pulls that leave loops of thread that can ensnare little fingers and toes.

Is the terry cloth actual towels? I've seen some absolutely wonderful baby quilts made with patchwork terry cloth and flannel squares, one of our local shops carried a wonderful selection of Terry cloth fabrics. They were not super heavy towels though. I say, yes you can, be sure to prewash and, if there is a big difference in weights you might want to either add to the flannel. You could add batting squares to the flannels ( then they would have a new layer when sandwiched & quilted) or just an extra layer of flannel or muslin could be enough.

Thank you for the responses!! Yes they are regular terry towels. I have had a terrible time once with fabric bleeding! I now wash everything, no exceptions - one time burnt second time shy! I use the terry towels because I can't find good terry fabric. I will have to wash the towels and compare thickness. I like the idea of adding to the flannel if needed. I have been doing bibs and burp clothes with terry backing - feels real soft and will be absorbent.

Not sure if you do this already but since it is for a baby item I would wash in hot and dry in hot 3x, then cut and make the items you want. Also those color catchers are great and they work! The reason I recommend 3x is because then you are assured of all of the shrinkage to occur prior to your sewing. I used to do this when I made children's clothing.

Because of the weight of the terry cloth you might want to use 1/2 inch seams rather than 1/4 in.

Great ideas on the washing and seam allowance!

I'm thinking whole cloth guilt. The print flannel really wouldn't need to be cut, and one of the terry towels would be good for backing. No bulky seams that way. It's an adorable print flannel. Good luck what ever you decide to do.

I have never added terrycloth into a quilt.
