Bookbag/tote/purse, apron, elastic waist skirt, pillow cases, flannel doll blanket, etc are all simple, straight stitched beginner projects.
As others suggested - look into 4-H. Fantastic program with lots of possibilities for a girl this age. For sewing, self-confidence, leadership skills, life skills.
