I have read Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools by Greg Mortenson who lives in Bozeman. I clearly understand the need for training and educating women in Afghanistan. The saying I have heard goes something like this, "Educate a man (Afghan) and you educate a person, educate/train a woman and you train a whole village."
I wonder if possibly Greg has shipping connections set up with the military or other non-profit so the donations that come from quilters could be sent to Greg and then forwarded.
Nope, I do not live in Bozeman, actually I live in Eastern Washington.
From what you write I would think you have the knowledge to spear-head this project.
FYI, the Wounded Warrior quilt project, Just One Star has ties to the Marine's organization, Semper Fi. I wonder if there could be a connection made that way. Just trying out ideas. Libber
Sounds like this might be meant to be. Let's see what comes of it. Who knows maybe this will show the nation that people can work together despite, beliefs, politics and war.

I am so excited for you. Needlework has been bringing women together for centuries. Keep an open heart and mind, and above all, be flexible. I am sure the learning will go both ways! Can't wait to see what you do!

When I was in Haiti, we taught men and woment to embroider. I spoke very little Haitian and am left handed besides. They caught on very fast and did wonderful work. I'll bet they will surprise you.

Would you care to share what your other role in Afghanistan is? I'm sure it is not totally for quilting outreach programs!
I am a senior HR sergeant for the American Forces Network Afghanistan (AFN). The mission of AFN is to spread positive messages and command information to troops on the battlefield and overseas via TV and radio. We are the only source of entertainment in theater (along with Stars and Stripes newspaper) and we have been entertaining troops and keeping them informed for almost 68 years. I know this sounds like a commercial but I am so proud of the broadcasters and maintainers that I support that I give them kudos every chance I get.
How wonderful! I hope you're proud of yourself, too - WE all are! You are doing fantastic work. Thank you for communicating with and entertaining our troops - they get all too little of that, and they deserve every minute. Please let them know how much ALL of us support them and pray for them and appreciate them and what they are doing.

Please also tell your new quilting circle how much we care about them and their families and that we extend to them only the best wishes and hopes for their future, with safety, security and peace for them and their children and, of course, a little fun learning how to quilt!

Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you.

I am friends with a woman in South Africa who manages an outreach for the Venda women. They embroider scenes from their folk tales and she sells them at quilt shows around the world. I understand that cultural differences would prohibit the actual pictorial embroidery, but you might incorporate some of their traditional embroidery designs as 'feature blocks' in a quilt. Here is the website that my friend Ina has: http://www.tambani.co.za/

We lived in the Middle East in the 70's and I always found it was best to be very low key and middle of the road with everything. If you don't know the local customs, ask someone who has been there longer. It sounds like you're doing some great work there! I hope you will find that women are pretty much the same no matter where they're from, sometimes it's just difficult (and not safe) for all of them to really express themselves. Enjoy it. Hope it is successful.

I do not know what would be considered dos or do nots. Perhaps someone who has been there for sometime could help out with that one. It is so good what you are doing and I pray that God will bless it, you and the women coming. Take care!!
