I've been to the Quilt Connection and I agree. They are very nice and have lots to offer.

again ... it's great to read happy stories. also informative to speak - in general - terms about the sorts of things that make a customer's experience unpleasant.

it is absolutely inappropriate to use this board to "badmouth" businesses by name. each person's experience is their own and does not always indicate accurately the overal quality of service normally provided by that particular business.

I have to tell you about my recent trip to The Fabric Art shop in Lake City, FL. While on vacation, I passed the exit off of I-95 to go to this shop, but it was to early in the morning. On the way back home, we were running a bit late but tried to make it anyway. We pulled up at 5:59 PM and they closed at 6. I ran in just to get a business card to see what their website address was. The 2 ladies invited us in, turned on the lights, demonstrated their longarm machine and just went way above what you would expect. When I got home, I emailed the owner to tell her how wonderful these ladies were and that their kindness is why I nade a large purchase. Gotta love customer service.

I live in NC. It is an area of tourists. We have Lake Junaluska Methodist Assembly. We also have Maggie Valley, which draws moore. Then farthter to the west we have Cherokee with the casino. To the east, we have Asheville. My point is our area is always filled with tourists (love em) but the merchants have to realize that the locals are here 12 months of the year. Some
of them act like we are yokels or less than a citizen. If you are from another state you can expect drooling over you service. I tried to ask a question of an employee of an LQS she basically ignored me by straightening the material walking away from me while never looking me in the face. This happened not once
but three times.Needless to say I have not and will not go back
    to this shop ever

    Just my 2 cents...
I believe that you create your own experiences...
I have frequented 5 area quilt shops in the Denver area, one of which has recently closed. At least 3 of them greet me by name. I also have 4 JoAnn's that I can visit and do not feel mistreated when I visit them. When my husband and I have traveled I have visited shops in Kansas, Ohio, Virginia and a couple of other states. I can say that I HAVE NEVER been treated poorly in any shop that I have gone to. I like to look around without people hovering over my every caress. I find a person to help me and wait patiently if they are busy. The employees are busy whether there are other people in the shop or not doing the side work that is required at any job and it is not fair to expect them to drop the rotary cutter (or whatever) to cater to my every need.
Also, with the economy, ( I have been employed only 6 weeks in the last 2 1/2 years but have applied for over 100 jobs, so I do understand the ECONOMY), are these owner's/shop employees worried that they will be out of a job tomorrow? Have their husbands or a family member just lost their job? Has something just happened in the shop or at home that needs to be fixed? We have no idea what causes a person's bad mood, and we all have them. As we all know, costs are going up to the owners and thereby us the consumer. With that have the sales gone down enough that the owner is trying to decide who loses their job today or tomorrow? There are too many reasons for them to have a bad day and we all need to be just a tiny bit (great deal) more patient with our fellow man woman and quilt shop owner....

    Happy Quilting,
    Susan

I went to Joann's yesterday -- big sale, busy store -- the staff (4 of them, I think) were very helpful and friendly -- I'm going back today or tomorrow -- good experience in a busy store

i think that may be a good thing but ONLY if the shop owner knows about it in advance and wants the critique. to just take it upon yourself to judge how someone does business (behind their back) may not be taken well, no matter how (good) your intentions may have been. some shops may really appreciate such input, but others maybe not so much

In this economy, you better have a good staff or you will lose business. With the costs going up, I want very good customer service. I don't care if you have every bolt of wonderful fabric, if the staff isn't friendly, you will lose sales.

Maybe we should send out "secret shoppers" to these local quilt shops and post reviews. I would say you have to visit twice in order to be fair. Then let the store know we will be posting our results on this board. Give them a copy of what we liked and didn't like. Tell the stores somebody will be back in a month to see if things changed and then the review will change.

    Think it would work?! LOL
