You can also use flower head pins. You just put the letter or number with thin marker

I do the same thing. Works great for PPing.

I am a big office supply junkie so I find lots of quilt related uses for things like binder clips, file folders and organizers. I have sets of binder clips that I have numbered 1-40. I can attach a numbered clip to the design wall with a map tack or pin through the handle part of the clip. Then I can use the same clip when removing blocks from the wall and keep the blocks in order. I also use different colored markers so can add an extra level of sorting if I need more than 40 for one project.

i bought a sheet of art foam and cut it in 1"x2" rectangles, then used a sharpie to label them. I used my hole punch to put holes in them so I could pin them to fabric or to a design wall. I like them so well I made a second set to use alphabetically in quilts that have rows and columns. I even made a set for my partner in one of the exchanges here on the board. Since I had all of the supplies, the cost was nothing.

For the Bargello quilts I have made once I sewed the strips together I cut off the end with enough of each fabric, then used a sharpie to number each one. Then I taped the strip in front of my machine. That made it easy to work with.

Thanks for posting about these. I don't like to make do when there is something I can buy and get on with the task at hand.

I moved from using blue painters tape to using pins as I found I needed to move the labeling around at times. I used a large package of Clover flower head pins, and numbered all the white ones (on the flattest side of the flower) with a black Sharpie fine point marker. I wrote each alphabet letter on the yellow ones. Orange are for double alphabet labeling. If I need to make notations, I use white embroidery floss thread bobbin cards and write my little notes then pin them through the holes onto the design wall. The notes end up being used more than once, and they don't curl or tear as easily as stick it notes. I store the cards, markers, and the pins in a small plastic organizer.

I made my own (and some for friends) with some crafters beads from eBay. Some sellers will sell sets of 26 letters. I also have a numbered set. I prefer safety pins as they won't fall out - or stab me, lol.
