Are all Long Arms as tempermental as my Tin Lizzie?

We have an A1 and my DH uses every brand imagineable on it with very little problems. Ever now & then he will have to adjust the tension, but not often. I have read that a lot of machines really prefer certain brands of thread.

When I got my Tin Lizzie last month, the dealer told me...Only use King Tut and you will never have tension problems. She doesn't even sell that brand, so I was alittle confused... but she was right. My "Mitzie" TL only likes King Tut, just as my Janome only liked Aurafil or Mettler. The only problem I have had with my TL is the bobbin case being bent from me dropping it, and that problem has been rectified. So, yes, our machines are Thread Diva's and I will only use King Tut as advised by the dealer.

I guess I'm lucky. My TL can be very temperamental, but not so much about thread. I use Signature. Most days she likes it unless she's in a mood. I read on the TLyahoo forum that you can put thread in the freezer a few hours and it helps with shredding. No idea why.

Any machine should be able to use any thread you throw at it, as long as you have your tension adjusted properly, the correct needle in, and you don't have your quilt sandwich too tight. I think this is mostly a learning curve. Don't be afraid to play with tension... that's what those adjustments are there for!

My Nolting loves King Tut and Other Supirior threads, and nothing else. Quality thread is a must and the cost is worth haveing less aggrivation. Oh! Did I ever have a lot of problems when I was first learning to use the big machine. It is all trial and error. Now I always have a sample quilt (just 2 pieces solid fabric, So I can see the stitch quality) on zippers ready to load and test before I start any quilting. This routine saves so much time. Hope your future quilting goes better and better each time!

Wow, I've had my TL for about 2 months, and so far it will sew with anything I've loaded, Connecting Threads, Coats, Signature. Haven't tried the expensive stuff yet. The tension seems to be easily set too. Now if I could just get the bobbin winder adjusted...

We had a terrible time with tension setting on our Nolting. No matter what we did it was too tight. We finally changed the thread top and bobbin and now it has beautiful stitches. Thread does make a difference. It may be that our old thread had been in storage for a long while and exposed to extreme heat and cold. So glad it is working good now.
