Years ago when mom got a new machine that used different bobbins, dad got the bright idea to mount all of the old bobbins on a big board with screws, and attached a long piece of string to it. He gave it to us kids to use to make string designs with. Eventually we started finding other strings, (kite comes to mind) and built all kinds of designs with it. I remember spending hours coming up with new designs. I probably remember it so well because I played with it the most. I am also the only sewer in the family in this generation.

I have used them for thread for a second needle, or threads for the serger (needles) instead of two spools, I have also used them by separating embroidery floss, pulling out a strand and winding on a bobbin for piece work either by hand or sewing machine and that thread was the perfect color and I don't need to run around looking for a spool. When I use the embroidery thread on the sewing machine (not the embroidery machine), haven't figured out how to "flag" the end yet so I can change before I run out.

wow you guys are good. me? I am always digging to find another bobbin so I don't have to unwind mine for another color.. lol and here your making bracelets... what a cute idea and oh taking them for hand projects even better I hate taking tons of stuff to do binding but a tiny bobbin means less bulky things for my little bag. grand ideas!

Oh Pam that is a fantastic idea! I have a fake tree about 18" so that will go in my sewing room! I was wondering what I was going to do with it!!!!!!!

I spent some time locating those who use such things. The church where we vote at also produces blankets for homeless shelters and I donate any sewing materials I don't need to them.
That said, how about making a small 'sewing themed' wall quilt and add some bobbins to it for effect? I've also made gifts of sewing kits for non-sewers. The bobbins take up less space and you could include 4 in different colors.
