Your daughter might change her mind about the gray once she sees some lovely examples.
Gosh, Peckish, I changed mine! They are really striking with various grays.

I follow a lot of modern quilt blogs and there seems to be a trend of using light colored text fabric as backgrounds right now. I'm going to be starting a "Dear Daughter" quilt along on Rebecca Mae's modern blog, and that's what she's showing with bright colors.

or or go to amazon...that's my source of books. Sometimes better deals there

A background color can be any color. You can go with the basics, black, white, grey, tan, cream. Or you can match the room it may be in, blue, yellow, green. You can go super modern with orange. You could continue with the Farm Girl Vintage look and change the background OR keep the background and use wild/intense colors in the blocks. As always, your quilt, your rules. I always consider patterns as a guide line, not a must.

I just bought some yardage of Kona Ash for some future quilts. I was debating between a few of the grays by Kona and then read this blog:

    http://thebusybeequiltshop.blogspot....e-between.html

I was sold on Silver, then saw them in a store and decided I liked Ash the best.

Here's another quilt with pics of different grays:

I used a batik that is a dark blue/purple color with brights for a quilt. I love it It came out beautiful. It is the quilt in my avatar.

Yes. Edyta has some quilts that specifically use bright batiks with beige patterns. Here's one example:

There are other examples on her site or if you look around.

I was thinking black or navy blue. It'll be a very pretty quilt, for sure.

Well we went to Hobby Lobby and tried to buy Kona Coal. The bolt was brand new but had tiny holes and some discoloration. The other grey was silver but it was way to light. The lady told me that she would order a new bolt and it should be there next week. I would also like to see Kona ash but they did not have that. Is there a good place to buy Kona online?
