I am making a teal and blue baby quilt. I want to finish it by using this quilting. The photo is not my quilt, it is just an example of the quilting I want to do on the top of mine. I've always finished my quilts off by tying them and have never tried quilting the top. I would like to do it myself. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about this. I don't even know where to start.

Photo of quilting that I would like to use. I hope you can see it.

First of all do you want to hand or machine quilt your quilt? The picture you posted looks like it could be machine quilted, but I am not sure. Anyway, if you have never quilted before, I suggest you find a class that teaches either machine quilting or hand quilting, depending on which you are interested in, and take it. Make a small practice pieces before quilting your quilt.

I machine quilt, it's faster. I know-I cheat. I also thought it looked like it could be machine quilted. I use a singer, does quilting like that need to be done with a longarm? I was hoping I could just do it, but I don't know how to keep the pattern consistent on my fabric.

Bri, machine quilting isn't cheating. I would recommend you take a class on machine quilting. Failing that, I'd find a book on machine quilting and read it before you quilt your top. Read the book and do the practice exercises in it. I think then you would be prepared to quilt you quilt.

You don't need a longarm. You should be able to quilt it on your machine.

Bri - I bet you could find a stencil you like that you could mark on your quilt, then follow (try) the lines with your sewing machine. Try on a sample first and see what you think.

(I am just learning to machine quilt, but I'm learning something new with each try.)

You need to look at the Golden Threads line of quilting. They have patterns and paper. Check into it. It is great.

I haven't got the machine quilting down yet - it is pretty difficult with patterns. I am finishing my first quilt, for my daughter, with stencils and then hand quilting it. It takes longer, but my daughter will cherish it for years to come. Good luck.

Make practice "sandwiches" from scraps of muslin and batting. They are easier to handle. It takes some practice to figure out what speed works best for you. I tend to have to go faster around the curves when meandering so the back bobbin thread doesn't look pulled. If you can, always have the needle stop in the down position.
