This is my favorite idea. All of them are very good though. I am a novice at quilting and never thought of any of these tips. Thanks to everyone!
I made my own row and column markers by cutting "art foam" into 1" x 2" rectangles, punching a hole in the corner in far enough in for strength, then I use quilting safety pins to attach them. I can write whatever I need on them with a sharpie. I can even color code them because "art foam" is available at the dollar stores.

I use a sharpie to write numbers on blue painters tape and stick it to the rows. I have a tall cabinet beside my ironing station so I stick the tape pieces on the side of the cabinet as I remove them to use them over again.

When I'm ready to sew a bunch of blocks together and need to keep track of the order, I print out a sheet that has "1A 1B 1C... 2A 2B 2C...", as much as I need for the job. I cut the labels apart with an old rotary blade and pin them in the upper left corner of the blocks. I throw away the labels when I'm done because it's too much trouble keeping them in order, but I keep the file with the labels for the next time.
tranum, I like your idea as well!
