I have discovered felted wool appliqué. What a treat to sew the soft jewel tone wools. I didn't know wool could be mixed with cotton fabrics for quilts. They are beautiful. To think of all the times I bypassed the hand dye wools with barely a glance at shops and shows. Not any more!

 You really didn't have to tell me about this
Now I will have to go and check them out
How do you wash a quilt using this wool in it? I have stayed away from wool clothing due to the washing issues

I didn't realize you could mix them either. Is there machine washable wool. That wouldn't be too bad to use.

Once wool has been felted, it's washable, won't shrink. To felt 100% wool, wash it in very hot water and dry in hot dryer.

    Bella
As one of your old members, I just wanted to share with you. I have searched hi+lo for wool at thrift shops, also checked out many fabric shops. Bottom line the fabric shops are pricie. The thrift shops are good for your basic dark colors. Hard to find in colors. So I started experimenting with felt. I have been pretty pleased with my results to date. I use oil pastel crayons, to create the shading and detailing on the pieces I use for applique. Requires alot of piece work and I hand applique all my pieces, but as of todate I'm on my fourth quilt, using felt. I'm still interested in using wool and I still look. I have found that for me to buy a piece of white wool and then dye using kool-aid, would be the best. But I'm an old believer, that you don't break the bank to make your art work. The last time I checked Joanns, they wanted 12.98 a yd for plain white wool. But I'll continue on my quest, an on occassion I get lucky, Rebecca

Wool Felt: is a type of fabric that is made by bonding fibers together. It is not a woven fabric. Because it is a blend of wool and rayon, when soaked in hot water, then tossed in the dryer, the fibers will shrink up and cause the fabric to be bubbly and soft. You can expect shrinkage of 3”-5” in length and 2” – 4” in width per yard. Think of wool felt as more similar to a craft type felt, but with a much nicer feel, flexibility, and variety of colors. Wool Felt will NOT pill, shed, or stretch out of shape like acrylic or polyester craft felts tend to do.

Felted Wool: refers to a woven fabric that has been soaked in hot water, agitated, then exposed to heat for drying. This process compacts the weave of the fabric and creates a very dense product. Think of felted wool as being similar to a wool hat or heavy wool coat.

Rebecca, I'm thinking of buying wool yarn and knit simple swatch sizes and then felt it myself. I can find 100% wool yarn much cheaper then wool yardage. And the wool yarn has great color selection.

Thrift stores here don't have 100% wool anything. It's always a wool blend.
