I give to family and friends, but haven't given to a charity as I haven't finished family, friends and myself yet.

I did buy some fabric for baby quilts for charity but I need to finish the family friends and me still.

Then I will work on those. I am slow.

When I make a quilt that utilizes a new method ... often it isn't perfect or even very close. But I am a finisher, so it gets finished and donated because I would always see the mistake. So I practice until I like the results and keep the last one. All the practice quilts get donated ... and the charities love them!

It sounds to me like you are the true homemaker. And giving something you made, such as a quilt, takes much more time and giving from the heart.

If you know that the items you make won't be appreciated or valued, why would you give them to the person, I don't think you're being selfish at all. I would do the same.

Thank goodness my sweet husband never questions my need for another quilt. at first I gave all my quilts away, now not so much. I will make a quilt for a new baby, but mostly I am emotionally involved with any quilt I make.

My family and anyone who knows me knows I don't buy gifts. I only make things, sew, knit, crochet, cook, bake. I started making my gifts when I was a kid; made pillow cases, aprons for grandparents, aunts, everyone. Now it is expected of me. I am sorry that your family can't appreciate what you do, maybe one day when they see something you made with love they will learn to appreciate it. After all it is not really about the gift itself, it is about your unselfishness in giving a gift from your heart.

    Ditto!

In the next few years to come I'd like to get involved in quilting for some charities as well.

I still have most of the ones I have made & finished, but do give when the occasional arises, & i think it would be loved & appreciated. Too many show no interest, so why all time & work on them, right! All our relatives are in CA, so none of them see my work, unless they bother to go look at my pics online, & most don't. May take some finished ones, small sizes, on our next trip out there, but time will tell, &, if I even want to part with them, lol. I have always made things, & I think it pays to be careful who you give to. Some just have no interest & could care less...
