I have one and love it. Always use it for paper piecing, which is my favorite quilting style.

It also comes in a 6 inch length, which might be easier to deal with depending on the blocks you're making.

It's a fabulous little notion to have, and I use it ALL the time when I'm paper piecing.

You can pp without it, but if your teacher is going to be using it in class for a new technique (to you), you're probably better off having it. I'm sure the shop sells it.
I couldn't have said it better myself! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE paper piecing. Being somewhat of a minimalist when it comes to gadgets, I told myself I could get along without that silly little ruler... But, after making several paper piecing projects without it, I finally bought a "silly little 1/4 inch ruler," for a whopping $6.75. I was just plain mad at myself for not getting one sooner!

add 1/4" ruler is one tool that I found really great for paper piecing. I have purchased other tools that were not useful but this was a home run.

If you are doing a Judy Niemeyer class, you will need one.
Any paper piecing classes you take will want you to have one.
