I just got the new 820QE and there is a big difference...
I had one of the original 820's and I had a lot of issues with skipped stitches, etc. However, I loved the machine so much that I finally bit the bullet and bought a new one, trading in my old one, and let me tell you, it feels totally different. They did change the hook and that was the main issue contributing to the skipping issue. I'm sure there are other improvements as well. The throat space is the same (12" from the needle).
As far as price, it retails for a bit over 7k, but you can get it brand new out of the box for a little over 6k.
I would not suggest getting a used older version or demo. You might be very unhappy, but I'm very excited about the new one.
