I have one but don't get a bad smell. But then, I don't use steam or alot of sprayed water. Love my mat.

I have wool pressing board love it have not had any issues, cover with pressing cloth while ironing if no help stop using sometimes people are sensitive and this may be what is going on.

wbfrog that might have been but we were at a quilt retreat with 20 women and it grossed us all out. Even after she took it out of the sewing room it smelled for hours. Nothing like sheep urine and manure to wake quilters up. she is sending it back. Thanks for all the input. At least we know there are those out there that don't smell. She ordered one from a local quilt shop.

You could try 2 teaspoons baking soda and 1 cup of water with a few drops of an essential oil and spray the mat with that.

I have noticed the smell also. Another thing I learned NOT to do is steam iron fabric wet with spray starch (or just water) on the wool mat. White fabric seemed to pick up color from the wool mat.

yes, wet wool! mine came with a spray bottle and instructions to put baking soda, water and couple drops of essential oil to deal with it.

do NOT use it on on a higher temp than wool . Using steam will make it smell if too hot. I love mine.

I have one and use a light spray of water. I have never saturated my fabric with water; I give it a light spray of water while holding it away from my ironing board in the air. Too much water will make the wool soggy, slow to dry, and smelly.

I have just made a wool pressing mat. I cut 4 layers of older 100% wool fabric into 12 1/2" squares and sewed around the outside edges so they wouldn't shift. Then I made a "pillowcase" out of a wool flannel for the square. This fits nicely on the wide end of my small pressing board that I use near my sewing machine. I've only used it a couple of days, but am liking how it is working out. I have used water to spritz on the seams when needed. Don''t know if it smells..I'm to tho poster who can't smell. I figure the pillowcase can be washed if necessary. All fabrics were washed with hot water and dried in the drier prior to making this.
