the king tut threads come on big spools and are cost effective that way, but i can't balance them on the spindle for the lizzie. other people have the same problem with their longarms. the ways it's set up, you can't sit the thread anywhere else and have it feed correctly.

yes, i believe so. i think they're plastic, like most of today's spools.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. The thread stand gets in my way when quilting so I was looking for something to hold spools the size of serger thread spools (madiera).

Butterflywing, I was wondering if maybe you could fill that large cone with a styrofoam shape and then insert an empty spool of the size that actually works well on your Lizzie?

i tried that, but the spindle isn't tall enough and the da*n thing flops around and falls off, pulling the thread with it.

Oooooh, I'm thinkin' that wouldn't make me too happy either...but I'd be for finding some way to reduce the cost of quality thread. I'm gingerly assuming that Lizzie is a Tin Lizzie...have you spoken with them to see if there are any modifications that they're aware of that work?

I have bought the larger thread "wood inserts" at a quilt shop but have'nt seen them anywhere else. Looks like a dowel with a hole down the middle...fills up the space so it fits good on the spindle. Does this make sense to you ?
