I have done needle turn appliqué since taking a class in 2005 from LQS. (1st of many). The original teacher taught using a plastic overlay to draw pattern. Now I use a light box and pin my pattern. I tried back basting and template turn machine appliqué. But I usually just pre-pinch my edges. Needleturn is my 1st love. Today I’m helping two friends with their beginning needleturn project. (Pass it own).
The best advice I got was after taking the beginner class I did a BOM of needleturn. Finished it, which made me “PRACTICE” .

I have the cutest book that my Mother gave me years ago...it's all applique bunnies "Bunnies and More" by Darcy Ashton. You needle turn appliquers.....is this too "hard" for a beginner appliquer to do needle-turn? I'm just not comfortable with the fusing process and don't want the little bunnies to fray. What is your guidance on a needle turn applique shape to start with? I've done 1 quilt appliqueing hearts and it turned out okay. What would be a good second quilt to do? (shape-wise). Thanks!

OK ladies and gents-------- It's been a while since anything has been posted to this thread. What are y'all working on now? I have several applique tops in the making. Since I needle turn applique it takes a little longer to finish blocks. Right now I am working on a Baltimore style quilt by Mary Sorensen. She has some DVD's and is a great teacher. Not connected to her in any way. I am also working on Woodland Creatures and a couple of Hawaiian tops. I switch around to keep me fresh.
This thread started a few years ago so let's get the interest going again. Let's applique!!!

this is the first I have heard of this club, count me in also. I love all kinds of hand work and when I do applique I usually sew light weight interfacing on the back then slit the center and turn. Looks like needle turn applique but you don't have the pesky little fuzzy threads to worry about. I have done it the traditional way also.

Also, here is a quick tutorial that shows how I do freezer paper, starch and gathering together to applique. I have coordination problems, but my applique now looks really nice. (For the record, I use dots of Elmer’s to place them, then hand sew them down.
