Hi, everyone!

Can I join you guys? I think I posted on this thread when it first started, but haven't been back.

I'm starting a new quilt, hand appliqued, with the needle turn method. I've tried all kinds of other ways, but the plain old needle turn under is easiest for me. I know a lot of people don't like it, but it just works better for me. I don't know why.

I love to sit in the evenings with my family watching tv, and work on some hand applique.

This is the quilt I'm starting, I LOVE it! Its like a modern Baltimore Album quilt, I think.

Its a block of the month by Erin Russek, but she still has all the patterns up for each month. They are on block 10, but I'm just now starting. There are 12 blocks, with an additional center medallion type block.

She has already put up pics of the 2011 BOM, and its awesome, too!

LOVE applique. Use freezer method most. I'm mostly self taught but decided to take a class and I'm working on "Baltimore Christmas". Currently stitching down "Santa". I started late to this BOM and they were doing Santa FIRST! Ackk

Bonnie, it appears to me that you appliqued the pumpkin and stars thru your top fabric, batting and the backing. Applique is attached to the top only before making the sandwich of the three layers. Perhaps this could be the problem with your stitches. I can see on the back side that your stitches are evenly spaced and the same size. This is a good thing. What are your thoughts about the three layer thing? Suz

Thanks for the comment about the back stitches being evenly spaced. :) They normally aren't. I appliqued the top before sandwiching it. The stitches you see on the back are the "hand quilting" that I did for the piece. The problem with my stitching in this piece is multiple. I should have used a heavier thread and/or pulled it tighter. Keeping it tighter so that it didn't "loosen up" when I went to the second stitch. It still is a lot better than previous attempts.

Ok Suz: I'm starting to look at fabric and for a heart pattern. I found this and thought I'd post it in case somebody else needed it.

It has different size hearts on the page so thought that was good.

I'll post a pix of the fabric when I get it decided. Oh yeah, just wanted to say that now I've read through the instructions more carefully, it doesn't seem as intimidating. :) I'm going to give the 20 hearts a try. Anybody else with me?

Ok. Here is my fabric for the group project that Suz posted. I decided not to go with traditional heart fabric. Instead I went with warm colors that were in my stash already. So there is a goldish one that will help to lighten it up, some stars, etc. Perhaps I'll call it winter hearts or something.

Whatcha think?

Ok guys. Here is the layout for those 20 hearts. I swapped out the lightest fabric with the one that is left side bottom row.

They are scrunched up so that I could take the picture. The actual fabric looks better, of course, but I scanned each fabric and cut out the hearts and laid them out according to Suz' plan. This way I could see if they would all mesh together.

I will probably put them on a cream colored background.
