I hand applique. I taught myself by appliquing hearts on white squares. I spent 7 years and made a quilt that just covers the top of my california king bed. I call it my 7 Year Stitch. Now I am working on a basket quilt. The baskets are cut out of 5 inch squares and sewn onto 6 inch tan-ish squares. The method I use in needle turn. Sometimes I use a plastic template and trace on the front of the fabric. I cut around a scant 1/4" (but you don't need to measure). With the hearts, I ironed freezer paper templates on the front of the fabric, cut around it and then needle turned to the edge of the freezer paper. I recommend using a straw needle and applique pins. I match my thread to the piece I am appliquing down. Happy stitching!

I have used fabric glue to turn under this time but I have also done needleturn. This needs to be done in a week. :) I am off today so will be working on it.

That looks good enough to eat and reminds me I haven't had breakfast yet! LOL. Don't worry. I'm self taught also. I've been told that if we just keep practicing we get better. We also are our own worst criticizers. Do you enjoy doing it? Then keep doing it and bring a smile to people's faces. :)

I am self taught, also. I pre-baste all my stuff, and my stitches are getting to be invisible.

My Oregon quilt was an adventure in mixed techniques. I designed the green with yellow flying geese in it, I designed the paper piecing myself. The beaver is pp also, but I had to re-scale the pattern down to work in the space. The sun/moon is hand embroidered, with a chain stitch used as a filler stitch. The lighthouse and the douglas fir are all designed into pp patterns. The fish is made from a b/white print with puff paint spread on top to make it look that way. I loved making it.

Gals, I am really liking what you are all doing. I think we are all somewhat self taught. My first applique project was made from a pattern I attempted to copy. Recall those snowflakes we folded and folded and then cut a design, well this was my first applique project. Turned out pretty good and I knew then that applique would be my preferred quilting technique.

Presently, I am preparing to do Gramdma Country Album from McCalls Quilting 1989/90(?). I did Country Album II and recently my son took it home with my blessing, so now I need to replace it. Robert Callaham is my favorite designer. I have also done several of his centers. Suz
