I'm a novice but learning the technique as I create blocks from a Piece a Cake book. I love Nancy Chong's video for great instruction and visuals. She also teaches at Quilt University, sadly I could not do her workshop when she was in town recently. I find getting a good sharp point difficult but will continue to practice.

We did WILLIAM MORRIS for a class. It was needle turn and I found it very difficult. I never finished it.

I have done raw edge applique and you have to go slow to keep turning your fabric on curves to make it look natural. I don't care for the satin stitch around the applique. I will use this technique on folk art quilts, baby quilts and it really comes in handy to do a quick wall hanging.
I like needle turn applique and use freezer paper to get the shape of the flower, leaf, etc. It is a good take along project and for front of the tv. I am learning new things every time I do a project. And I have started working on a 5" block. The appliques are very tiny-for me, that is.

MarLeClair, some find it isn't their "thing". I love the look. If you did some blocks of the Wm Morris pattern, put them on the corners or center of a quilt. It will come out very lovely. I hope you will post pics.

I answered this, but my post never showed. I do raw edge appliqué. why isn't it considered aappliqué? I just completed a gorgeous (if I must so), quilt with raw edge teapots. I found the pattern at The Cherry Pit in Sevierville Tn, while on vacation in that area. It has to be quilted, and then I'll try to post a pic!

I've switched from satin, to blanket and love it. I bought an extra machine just for that stitch.
