    Thanks everyone for your help!

I just bought this book and I really like it as a starter book. It has great pictures and step by step instructions.
    Check it out on Amazon.

I have "The New Applique Sampler: Learn to Applique the Piece O' Cake Way" book, and I would recommend it to others. Lots of really good tips.

I bought it after seeing a re-run on Simply Quilts.

Take a look at "Applique 12 Easy Ways" by Elly Sienkiewicz. I have both books and Elly's book offers much more information and quite a few patterns with directions to use all the different methods.
