I use a tear away stabilizer that I use for my machine embroidery. Works perfect.

I have a tablet of Doodle paper that is 9" x 12" I bought very cheaply at Walmart. It is perfect for stabilizing embroidery work and it tears away very easily. Good luck with your quilt. It sounds delightful.

That was my first thought... freezer paper. Especially if you don’t want to leave a stabilizer in the quilt.
I’ll be watching to see how Tartan responds to your question. 😁

    I wish you the best!

Freezer paper was difficult to remove. I used it once when I had no newspaper. Never again. I just hope newspapers stay around in this day and age.

I doubt blank newsprint is going anywhere anytime soon because it's used widely for other things -- packing material at shops and sketchbooks for artists come to mind.

I made a quilt with appliqued doggies on it for my granddaughter and I used Heat and Bond lite on the appliqued pieces and blanket stitched them down. I had no trouble then. I think a very light stabilizer would work fine.
