I agree with others about the thin white sashing (or flange) and then black sashing. I'm not sure about a solid white for the white sashing - maybe try (red on white) or (black on white) and see what happens. I think a wider solid black sashing would be perfect.

Going to be one gorgeous quilt!

Thanks everyone. I have been thinking on this one for so long, that I just could not decide if my idea was great or totally crazy. I think I will look for a tone on tone for the white and perhaps a slightly mottled black or very dark charcoal for the black.

I found a great book called 60 Pieced Quilt Borders by Judy Laquidara and I am hoping to make the border as unique as the quilt. I had hoped to get this finished and to the LAQ so that I could present the finished product to DH at Christmas. Don't think I will quite make that deadline but maybe Valentine's day would be better anyway.

I like this idea! From experience, the thin strips are a nightmare to keep looking straight. I do like the idea of a bit of white, then the black sashing.

I don't think I would use any sashing. All the blocks look like they have borders, so I would just alternate the red and black blocks. I understand though that this may not give you the size you want.

I second the idea of gray and then black. I have thought a bit about the border and wonder if a variety of the fabrics you used to create the blocks might be used to make a piano key strip and then play with some gray, white and black strips of varying widths to create the border and bring some boldness to the outside edges?

Ubequilting is right. Her suggestion makes using two colours much easier and more accurate. Lfletcher, I auditioned no sashing as well and it was waaaaay too busy. With so many different designs and fabrics, this quilt absolutely needs sashing to rest the eyes. Basketman, I tried grey instead of white and it looked dirty. I am planning to use left over fabrics from all the blocks in the border but have a more intricate one in mind. But thanks for all the ideas. This time, I am happy to realize that my thinking is echoed by so many others.

The thin white sashing is my choice. Great job.
