I made them with batting in the middle, but DD & DIL didn't like them. They were too stiff. They liked the ones made with 1 layer of weighty flannel and crocheted edging. These were soft and flexible enough to wipe a milk mouth. I made some with fleece also, and they liked those but spit-up tends to run off the poly fibers rather than absorb.

I noticed that when we burp our babies we don't put them on our shoulder, we sit them in our lap. my new GD burps,"progectile" (sp) and a lot of it.
I make my bib and burp cloth all in one. Using 2 pieces of flannel I cut out the bib and extend the bottom, however long you want it. I cut mine about 12" long. Sew them right sides together, turn right side out and top stitch about 1/2" in from the edge.
The baby has the bib on and I hold the other end in my hand or on my lap. You could also place the long end on your shoulder.
    Works for me.

Thanks for any and all ideas...
These are ones I made recently. Flannel on both sides, flannel inside, bias tape trimmed. I practice quilting (FM and regular) on them but the quilting would not be necessary.

I use the prefolded diapers too. They are very absorbent. Didn't put anything on the back side. Of course I did the designs on my me.

Thank you for the baby burp cloth ideal. I make swaddling blankets out ot two layers of flannel. They are 36 inches square. Flannel is 44inches wide. If I buy a yard of flannel, I have a strip of 8 inches left over. Out of that I could make burp cloths.

I was recently looking at burp cloths (cloth diapers) at both Walmart and Target, they are very thin....Nothing like they were when my kids were little. Where are you girls finding thick ones?
