Then do a hand applique stitch around the duck, right up against the inside of the satin stitch. You might just want to iron the middle of the duck to hold it in place so you can pull the fabric right up to the satin stitch, and then iron the rest after you've done the hand work. If you are careful with your stitching not to go completely through the quilt, it won't show on the back.
This is exactly what I was picturing. I don't think the hat would do it, because the next time it is washed that tummy area is likely to pull away too. I think that particular fabric was the problem, and other appliques look ok.

Ditto on a bonnet or a hat. Like Sapphire_Rae said.

How about giving the duck a hat? That would be cute and wouldn't be a terrible amount of work compared to taking the whole thing apart. Really cute quilt.

The first thing I thought when I saw the duck was: ducky needs a hat! It would have to be hand sewn, but you wouldn't have to make a whole new quilt. Cute quilt. BTW

Trim out the frazzle and embrodiery a flower, sitting like a hat, on the duck. ???

A number of people have suggested hats. I've seen a duck with a rain hat on. That might be cute. It wouldn't look to much different from the upper right photo of cross-stitched ducks.
