Baby quilts
What size (in inches ) do you make your baby quilts? I like to use panels a lot in my baby quilts. The panels (to me) seem to be a little small for a nice size quilt. But, sometimes, when I add borders, they still don't look quite big enough but would work to use in a carrier or crib. I'd like my quilt to be used for a long time. So, I tend to make them a little bigger. What do you think is the ideal size that is not too small or too big and bulky?

What I tend to do is when someone in the family is expecting a new baby, they get a baby quilt. This is generally a smaller size quilt, generally no larger than 40 inches long. This quilt is usually made to match whatever colors / theme the parents have chosen to deck out the nursery in. This quilt is for the PARENTS. Babies have no idea what to do with a quilt other than sleep or spit up on it.
Then generally for their 1st or 2nd birthday, usually around the time they are sleeping in a toddler bed, they get a bigger quilt. This time I choose the fabrics ( usually bright fun primary color types ) ,This time it is more about the toddler, less about the parent.

I have made a lot of the panels and people like them so they are roughly 36x45. I have also made them as large as 60x60 and he still uses that on his big boy bed at 5 yrs old. She never carried that with her. The flannel quilt gets used on the floor. and the shapey one is hanging on the wall. All in different houses. The last one I made was 42x48 and that seems a nice size. Can't use it yet cuz he's not here yet.lol

I tend to make my baby quilts 36" x 48".... or very close to that. The site I've seen that tells what size to make quilts says a baby quilt should be 36"- 45" wide and 45" - 54" long but I think getting them too big makes them really difficult to fit in the crib.

I tend to make them big. I just keep going until I am happy with what I am working on. I figure that it will be used for quite a while. I don't want to spend my time making something that will only be used a year or so.

If I'm using prints suitable for a baby, I keep the blanket small. I agree with Slightly Off Quilter – if I'm making something specifically for the child, when the child is old enough to notice, then I go bigger. I have seen fairly large blankets with pacifiers and other baby things, and I always think that's kind of odd. A baby doesn't need a huge blanket.
