I buy crayons and color pencils to color paper-pieced patterns to better help me add the right material at the right time. Has saved me a lot of time with the seam ripper.

There are always items found in the back to school section that can be used for other purposes. I've found plastic boxes to hold different items, all kinds of other containers, mechanical pencils especially, pens, and the list goes on. I've even found items in the clearance aisle in drug stores that can be used for quilting.

A week to 10 days after school starts--many items begin to be reduced--even better savings.

Kind of off topic, but don't the SCHOOLs buy the supplies for the students? Isn't there a budget for every classroom for construction paper, pencils, pens, etc. ?

Don't forget to check out the Clearance items on the end caps, you can find amazing deals there, too.

No and they haven't for a long time here in Iowa. At our local Walmart you can find a list of school supplies for each grade requested by the school your children attend and off you go shopping. Construction paper is provided but not paper; colors; glue; and each child usually brings a box of tissues to be used for the class room. Many teachers request certain color notebooks and corresponding folders. DIL is getting smart and saving folders from past years as child #4 starts preschool.
