A mottled batik could work fine - it would have both colors (yellow and green, along with others) which would really stand out on the multi-background, especially if the stars are two-toned. Also, it wouldn't be as flat as a solid background.
And, considering the use, it would be a more lively quilt, and not as funereal. I, too, love using black, but agree it would be too heavy in this case.

Some of you have asked what the pattern is. Its one I made myself. Its called the "Shuriken". Its really just a combination of a Modified Nine Patch and Flying Geese. This design is a bit special. Last year a woman was collecting fabrics and quilt blocks to make a quilt for the owner of the River Haven Salon, who was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer and was still in the hospital in Rochester, MN at the time. I had made a block from this quilt and had donated it. So hence the reason why I am using this design for Dale's quilt, who has throat cancer.
You all have had some very good ideas on what to use. I'm leaning towards using a white or cream, but might go with something else. I'm not completely set on anything at the moment.

I like the green on Green but I agree about the background, not because of the dirt and stain, after all, the quilt will be washable. To offset, too much whilt, I would substitute a white background that has a pattern in green and yellow. The continuity of the three colors would blend so well, it would almost look like whole cloth.
