I always lay my quilt top on top of my backing to check the size. I just like to see how much I want to leave extra in case it pulls in during quilting. I had about 2 inches at the top and bottom. Imagine my relief when the backing ripped askew but with extra instead of being short. I will do my sandwich with it up to about 1/2 inch from the top because if the top ripped like this then the bottom will be crooked to. I rip any more. Then I know for sure that I have enough

I rip large pieces and cut smaller pieces. Love your kitty cat quilt!

I usually rip. Can't wait to see those cats finished! They are so cute

you should be able to pull and tug this backing until the edges are 90 degrees square....and sometimes they are printed off square and you cant fix that.

I rip my backings, it works well for me, but I also know many who cringe at the very thought.

i do like to rip, but some times i need to cut the backing. i just always make sure it is generously sized

I always rip muslin when I use it for backing, as that seems to be the best way to keep the grain lines straight.

I lay my top on the backing and cut it evenly because I've noticed that sometimes just the process of ripping will skew the entire piece. (Love the cats - I've made that one in shabby chic fabrics)
