I just did a quick search and there are several sites that have a massive amount of information. Looks like some good reading. They also had pictures.

I don't know anything about the history of barn quilts, but I want to share some pictures of the "barn quilts" at our Red Willow Bible Camp. The camp has become known for, among other things, the annual fundraising quilt auction. I donate quilts to that auction and have shown many of them in the pictures section here on the board.

These pictures show "barn quilts" on the camp buildings. The small one is hanging by the Phoebe cabin door. (Each of the cabins has a name.)

I remember seeing barns with quilts painted on them, but don't know anything about their history.

I know there is a resurgence of barn quilts. Seymour, Wisconsin has a map so you can drive and see all the barn quilts in the area. There is also an Amish store in the area.

I don't remember seeing any on my numerous trips cross country when I stopped off in Kansas during the 70s. It seems recently a resurgence of them.

I just assumed they were descended from Pennsylvania Dutch (German) barn ornaments.

If you ever go to Walnut, Iowa said to be their antique capitol, drive around and you find barn quilts, some on the backs of the buildings.
