    I use either tatting thread or pearl cotton for basting. Because of the "twist" in the thread, the layers of fabric seem to hold together very well without shifting. I don't have problems with it leaving any holes in the fabric; I pull it out as I am ready to quilt an area, and cannot tell where the basting was once it has been removed.
