    I use microtex sharp 10 and aurfil thread and have no problems.

    i always use 'SHARPS' when working with batik's...if you have a ball-point needle in the machine it will make a popping sound going into the fabric. and if you are using a quilting needle? is it new and sharp? i only use quilting needles for actual quilting, never for piecing (just because i pay more for them and save them for what they are for; for piecing i always use either a 'sharp' or a universal needle. and changing your needle at least every 8 hours of sewing.
