I just use the side that I like better or I think is prettier.

Yes, it is just hard to figure out. Hold it under a good light and look closely at any stamping. It would be clearer on the "right" side. Also I think the fabric sometimes looks slightly "shinier" on the right side. If you can't really see a difference, then it won't make a difference

I find it very difficult to decide which is the "right" side. I pick the one I like best.

In a good light flip it twice. If you can't tell which side it which, no one else will either.
One of the ladies in our quilt group uses small left over bars of soap to mark the wrong side. I'm not that particular.

nope you can use either side you want the beauty of batiks is their versatality, just look at both sides and use the side you like best there are always some differences that add to the character. and remember, all fabrics have 2 sides and either one can be used at any time, you are paying for both sides of the fabric. if you check out watercolor quilts quite often some of the squares used are considered by some as the wrong side but they work perfectly in the application being used turning them to the (wrong) side helps them blend in with the adjacent fabrics.

I was actually buying a batik recently and the lady cutting it out pointed out that the wrong side (the side on the inside of the fold) was prettier than the right side - so naturally, I had to buy more of it! I do have some with gold shiny designs on the right side and it is not on the wrong side.

That's what I love about batiks. Great on both sides.
