Hancocks & Conn Threads both have batting for 30% off right now. There is also Battingsupersale.com that has good prices on sale. They should have a sale soon. You can buy in pkg., case & rolls.

Flannel works, I've also used blankets and even used "quilted" mattress pads, that I've picked up at yard sales/thrift stores.

I have gone to an Army/Navy store and bought their army blanets to use as bastting in years past. I don't do much quilting now as I am old and have too much arthritis to do much.

I just ordered from Fat Quarter Shop- a new to me brand- Happy Cloud. I bought silky blend and bamboo blend. I believe they are on sale the whole month. Excellent prices and free ship.

For smaller quilts Hobby Lobby has the smaller sizes sold in a bag (twin and crib) of Hobbs 80/20. You can purchase these for about $8.00 and $4.00 respectively with a coupon. It's not a bad way to go if you aren't buying large amounts at one time.

Not only does Joann's have coupons and sales, but if you hit it right, the batting could be 40 to 50% off and you could have a % off of the total purchase on regular or sale stuff. Just sign up for their mailers or apps. Plus, once in a while they have senior days.
