    I am cutting denim jeans up to make a rag quilt and have been told that if I put batting in, it would be too heavy and I feel that no batting is a good idea. I think I will just use 2 squares of flannel. I got a lot of advice and there were many ideas on rag quilts so I think you probably can do whatever you are comfortable with. BTW-congratulations on your new family member coming soon.

    When rag quilts first became popular, Osnaberg (a soft woven thick-ish cotton fabric) was used as the batting layer. It frayed nicely and was inexpensive. I think you can still get it at fabric.com

    Are we speaking of Osnaburg, or a similar word, a loose weave fabric? I have only seen it in white or off-white. It is often used in the faux chenille.
