I don't keep a lot of the 2" variety but 6" or over I do keep. To me, an easier way of joining pieces is to press fusible tricot (knitted nylon dressmakers' interfacing that I pick up on sale at Joann's). I cut the fusible tricot into two inch wide strips and press approximately one inch onto each side of the batting I am fusing. It is so lightweight, there is no bulge and it's quicker than zigzagging the edges. I use this method anytime I have to supplement the width or length of batting. I almost always buy the largest piece of batting I can when it's on sale and have relatively large 'scraps' leftover.

I learned to keep all scraps because after the moment I threw them away I realized there is something I could do with it like all the goodies mentioned above.

i used them for batting for gift books this year, I covered
school notebooks with batting then fabric for the bee gifts.
they also can be used for stuffing, pincushions, needle books and all kinds of things, You can put them on the bottom of your swiffer if you have one, pin on your broom too for cobwebs, I clean up cat hair too with them.

I cut them into little nippets and use for stuffing things like stuffed animals and pillow inserts. Works great for me.

I would never have thought of using them on the swiffer, but GREAT idea.

I keep the batting scraps and butt them together and zig zag them and make a whole new piece of batting. I use it in placemats, several in potholders, I've even put enough together for a table runner or two! I don't ever throw them away.

I decided to keep my scraps of batting since I can use them when I make runners or smaller crib quilts. I am now using adhessive spray instead of safety pinning my quilts and the spray has allowed me to use all the odds and ends of my batting I have leftover from previous quilts. It doesn't make a difference because I just lay the pieces next to each other and spray them down. No waste and no loss. Works for me like a charm and I save money too.
