batting selection

new to this - only my second post - have learned so much already and gotten so many ideas already! have been working on 3 baby quilts - all different. finally got my son's done - his baby is due next week! first grandbaby for me!
on to the question - everytime I get ready to put a quilt together I am never sure what kind of batting to use. so many out there. Everyone I talk to recommends something different. Does anyone out there know of any good websites that explains the pros and cons of different battings? I used a wool batting for the baby blankets and the quilt is very soft but probably would not use of larger quilt as is expensive. Any help will be appreciated!

I only use Warm & Natural. (right now, Joanns has it on sale with free shipping)
I've also used old (washed very well) blankets too.
I've used wool in the past, but have found that the quilts have shrunk because many people don't pay attention to the washing instructions.
Baby quilts, at least the ones I make and give away, get washed ALOT, so it would need fabric/batting that will not shrink alot.

I have been using Warm & Natural often, but I throw mine into the dryer for 10 to 15 minutes and the heat helps shrink it some so you don't have to worry as much about it shrinking later. Plus it gets the folds or wrinkles out of it and makes it easier to handle when you are putting it all together. Also it helps cut down on the amount of lint you get from it when you are quilting it.

I mainly use Warm & Natural now. I used to use poly, but it doesn't hold up as well for a baby quilt that gets washed frequently.
One thing to consider when deciding is how far apart you plan to quilt. If you are quilting further apart, you need a batting that can handle it. I think Warm & Natural says 8" or 10" apart, something like that. I've seen some that say a lot less than that. They would require heavy quilting. That might be too stiff for a baby quilt.

I'm a huge fan of the Quilter's Dream line of batting. I use the poly, blend, cotton, puff, wool and orient. My first quilt was made with the cotton select, it was a washed and dried so many times and the batting stayed intact.

I don't believe there is such a resource available, unfortunately. Each project may require a different type of batting, depending on its intended use. That will come with experience, but for now, when you have a project in mind, I'd suggest asking someone for a recommendation per project.
You might want one type of batting for a wallhanging, something entirely different for a kids quilt, etc.
As for BRANDS... I'm also a Quilters Dream fan, they're battings are wonderful.
