I also like a lot of quilting, it gives it a lot of body and a great feeling too.

Fast 2 Fuse will make it really stiff if that's the effect you want. I use it for fabric bowls. I don't know where you can get it in the US but I expect Google does. :D

Thanks everyone. I'm going to try plain fleece since I don't want to take the chance on messing up the fusible since it's QAYG. If it doesn't seem thick enough, I'll try adding some sort of fusible to the backside of the fleece after I'm done with the quilting. I think I will try doing more quilting than what the pattern originally calls for as well.

    Default batting/stiffener for purse

soft and stable by Annie works wonderfully. It makes the bags look store bought. I just went to the International Quilt Show in Cincinnati and bought some and saw all of her products that were made with it. They looked fabulous. She also used it in placemats and did the stitch and flip method for her piecing, they looked nicer than store ready made.

It all depends on exactly the look you are trying to achieve. I've used everything from upholstery fabric to denim to varying weights of Pellon to WonderUnder to get the look I want

Last night I watched a Bernina webinar. They showed 2 bags, one with batting and one with Soft and Stable. After seeing that, I would definitely use Soft and Stable.

I would use heavy weight Pellon. My mom made me a bag with fusible heavy weight Pellon, and it puckers after it's been washed many times. So, I would use the non-fusible pellon. If it's quilt as you go, it would get sewn down.

Would using fleece instead of batting make it stand better? I thought about using the fusible fleece, but then remembered that the purse is constructed QAYG and that I ironed after each seam to make sure the fabric was flat. Is there a non-fusible fleece that I could use? Can I use regular fleece?

What about adding a layer of duck cloth or interfacing? Would either of those work with the batting?

    Thanks!
Someone, I think Pellon, makes a craft backing iron on. You might cut squares of it to iron inside of each square before you sew the squares together. Duck cloth would make a great lining, would stiffen a bit
