Sand getting through is something I hadn't thought of. Do drop cloths have a waterproof side that would prevent that happening? Or is the idea that the canvas is so thick, the sand is unlikely to come through?

Canvas is a tight weave, so I'm gonna try it. It's like a think painters cloth for like keeping paint from bleeding onto the floor. As for tarp material, I want to be able to wash it and also I can't afford anything new! I'll let you all know how it works out!
