I've had 2 Bernina's and you do have to use Bernina bobbins for best results. And, they are model specific. I couldn't use the bobbins from my older Bernina on my Artista 180 (which is also sort of older now. lol)

I've always used Schmetz needles (Microtex or Sharps) and have had good results. Universal needles work, but I dont' get quite as nice stitch as I do with Microtex or Sharps) I want to try Organ needles and plan to pick some up at Quilt Festival.

I use prefilled bobbins from Superior Threads for my Bernina 1260. I rarely wind bobbins. I get better balanced stitches when using the pre fills.

I would purchase the bobbins from the dealer, but the needle? Hmmm. Of course it's in the dealer's best interest to sell those items; they're in business to make money and you can't blame them for trying.

On the other hand, it's difficult to believe that Bernina would have made a needle specific to your 1020. I'd go back and ask what it is about non-Bernina needles that would interfere with the operation of your machine? If the response seems a bit wishy-washy, then you have your answer.

Should you choose a non-Bernina needle, Schmetz or Klasse are good brands that have worked well in my Bernina.

I have a Bernina 1020. I bought actual Bernina bobbins at JAF. I don't know if they are still selling that brand. I wouldn't buy generic because they might not be balanced correctly. I don't think Bernina makes needles. I use Schmetz needles. I bought my Bernina new out of the box. A few years later, I purchased a Bernina 1530. They share feet. There is a 1/4" foot for this model, #37. I tried a generic walking foot and ruffler and neither worked well. Just remember to take it in yearly for cleaning and maintenance.

You do want to use Bernina bobbins. You can use any of the needles. I love the schmetz ones and buy them when Joann's has notions 50% off. You do want to be careful using the Organ needles I have been told that they are fine for embroidery or if you are straight stitching but that they shouldn't be used when zig zaging or doing decorative stitches.
