    Default Bernina 540 Favorit

Does anyone know what a Bernina 540 Favorit sewing machine should sell for? It is my mother’s purchased in 1959. We are clearing out my mother’s home and I would like to buy it, but don’t know a fair price. It hasn’t been used or serviced for many years and is in the original cabinet. I want to be fair to my siblings, but don’t want to over pay not knowing what it might cost to put it into working order.

There is one for sale on ebay "untested" (Sounds like your situation) for $149. That sounds like a fair price- its a gamble as to how much you will spend to get it working or if it will work.

Here's one in a cabinet on my local craigslist, asking $275. However I wouldn't go by an ebay or craigslist ad unless the machine actually sold at that price. Surely there are some things that your siblings want from your mother's home. Perhaps you can all agree on who gets what without money changing hands.

The Bernina 540 was a great machine in its day. But that was a long time ago. The last 540 we took on trade and sold it to a struggling student who needed a machine, for $80.

If the camstack gear is cracked, it will only sew straight and zig-zag. Which may bring the monetary value down.

Found this old thread on here on the topic. Might find some of the comments helpful.
