Bernina 57 or 37 Foot?
#22
I was able to buy the 37 on ebay for $20. The 57 isn't much more. Just make sure you buy one that says it is an authentic Bernina or is still in the original packaging. They should also say whether it is for the newer models or older. Love my 37 but know lots who like the 57.

The only real difference in the two feet is that the 57 has a guide to butt the fabric against as you sew to ensure that quarter inch seam. I still get "out of line" using either foot.

I have the 37 and it works fine for me. I asked the clerk at the dealer's about getting the 57 and she told me the 37 was just as good. I had a foot similar to the 57 on my Janome but had trouble keeping the fabric from curling up a little into the guide so my seams were not always accurate. At least with the 37 you can see if the fabric is extending beyond the side of the foot. Good luck!

My 37 came with my machine...and I do use it, but a couple of years ago, when my Bernina store was having a sale on feet, I bought the 57 foot...and I use it the most now...really like the guide when I am going to be doing lots of piecing...especially as my eyes are tired by the end of day...the guide really helps me sew straight.
It really isn't that much more than the 37 foot when you think about how much it will help you...so I suggest you get the 57 foot if you can afford it.

I have both. I use the 57 foot most of the time. I use the 37 foot whenever the bar on the 57 foot would get in the way. For example, when making half-square triangles in the following method, the 37 foot works better than the 57 foot.

My Bernina did not come with a 37 foot. After using the machine for many years I tho't I should buy a 37 foot. I never use it as I like the 20 or the plain #1 because they hold the fabric more stable. Cannot get used to the 37 so never use it.

I use my #57 alot also. Instead of the moleskin, try a small stack of post-it notes with the tacky edge at 1/4". When they no longer stick, just tear of the bottom one (write a note) and restick to the machine.
I think the moleskin eventually gets an indent, which throws off the 1/4". Experienced this with the 4H kids who needed a guide.
I agree not to use generic feet on any machine. Why go to the expense of a good machine and then "cheap it" on the feet. My "Lucy" would not be happy with me if I tried it.
I also agree on using the single hole needle plate. What a difference in piecing!
