Default Bernina Specialists...and I know there are alot of you out there.

My son just picked up a Bernina 618 at a thrift store for $20 and he wanted to know if it would be a good machine for his girlfriend. I, of course, don't have a clue but figured someone here would. Does anyone know how old the machine is? Is it just a basic machine? Tried google but came up with info about every other Bernina just not this model. If anyone has a picture would appreciate seeing what it looks like.

Thanks to any and all who answer.

I would say any Bernina would be worth $20. I'm not familiar with that particular model, tho.

It's not made by Bernina, it's a Bernette. Bernettes are made FOR Bernina, but not BY Bernina. Is it worth $20 used? Probably, if it works. Though Bernettes are not the same quality at all.

It's a low end Bernina...made in the Far East. Bernette isn't a quality machine like Bernina...but if she is a beginner, I'm sure it will be fine.

    I found this interesting:

Bernette sergers are made by Juki. To the best of my knowledge, Janome makes the Bernette sewing machines, and has for awhile.
