I have a friend who is Vietnamese. Her English is actually pretty good, but she has difficulty reading and following instructions written in English. She wants to start quilting, already is a very good seamstress as she works in the alterations department at a local dry cleaners. A mutual friend gave her a copy of Georgia Bonesteel's Spinning Spools, and she was leafing through it yesterday and wants to give some of the patterns a go. I know they are fairly difficult, partly because that particular book was written before strip piecing and quick ways of doing half square triangles were made popular.

Can anyone point me to a book or magazine that would be a good choice for her? It needs to have lots and lots and lots of pictures, with little written instructions. We plan on getting together later - probably around Christmas - for some "hands on" lessons, but in the meantime, I'd love to give her something to get her started.

Any Quilt in a Day book that has a video online. She could follow the photos and watch the demonstration as many times as needed.

I think the Eleanor Burns' It's Okay if You Sit on My Quilt Book would work.

Have you looked at the books in Japanese? They are usually very graphic and rely on pictures.

Just a little FYI in case you start looking for "It's OK if You Sit on MY Quilt" book, It's Mary Ellen Hopkins, Not Eleanor Burns.

Alex Anderson has her "Start Quilting" book and DVD that is nice to have. Goes through all of the tools you need, why you need them. It's a nice beginners series IMHO. :)

I would just like to say that I did my first blocks out of the spinning spools book (my mom had a copy). They were a great way to get my feet wet and to start to understand what was going on!
