I have 2 irons and love them both for opposite reasons. The first is a very cheap, Rival that is small and very light-weight. I've had it for about 6 months and so far, no problems. However, I don't expect it to last long. It was less than $15 new, so I don't mind if it doesn't last a lifetime. The second iron is an older, used Rowenta that I found at GW. It's heavy, but it really lays down a seam fast. It also has a plate with a thin, pointed tip to get into those small places and flat sides that help to open up the seams. It has not spit, or spattered once. I paid $2 for it. My only complaint is that it uses a lot of electricity...why, I don't know. It must have a larger heat element.
