Ok ladies I have had some problems and need advice. It seems like when I wash FQ/ F8 and sometimes 1/2 yards they frey a lot or end up getting a hole in them. Also do you use soap or not when you wash. Any tips...

I just dip mine in a sink of cold water to see if the color will run. Then I dry in a towel and hang up to finish or you could press.

I rinse mine under warm water to see if the color will run, wring it out in a towel and press. Some people toss theirs in a lingerie net and toss it in the gentle cycle with other fabric.

Glad to see these posts. I had put mine in the washer and dryer and they were so limp and not real pretty even after I ironed them. Now I will just rinse them and hang up tp dry and press. I feel better now...HA HA, sometimes it takes me a little bit longer to get things thru my head....

I dip a corner in very hot water and then smash it into a piece of white muslin, it if leaves a color I don't use it.

If you starch them they'll be perfect again and won't shrink. I put mine in a lingerie bag and wash with all my other clothes. I figure whoever is using the quilts isn't going to be delicate with them. Then I starch the fabric and it won't run or shrink too much once quilted. It's a matter of preference.

I agree - I always wash everything in warm and dry on hot - first the fabric then the finished quilt. That way if anything is going to happen to it, I know before I give it to someone. The lingerie bag works great for fat quarters.

Soak in hotttt water in bathroom sink, check for dye, dip in dilute starch, hang dripping in bath tub on rack. They'll be dry by morning and I try to iron before I put them into the right pile.

I also wash mine in the kitchen sink. Put in a few drops of laundry detergent and let them soak for a while. I dip out a glassful of the water and hold it up to the window to see if any dyes have run. If not, empty soapy water, fill back up with rinse water, swish 'em, then lay out a big bath towel on the floor and layer the fq's on it. Roll it up and squeeze the excess water out. I let them air dry to "almost" dry and then press with steam. I can get them looking almost brand new by putting a few drops of white vinegar in the water for the iron.

I use a lingerie bag and throw them in with a regular wash. I do throw the color catcher in with it if I have any doubts.
