I just love those very thin bias strips used for vines on flowers, or basket handles and so many other things. However, I really don't know how to make them well. Nor do I know how to sew them on well. I'm sure my fellow quilting friends can offer suggestions.

I saw a picture of a little item that you run the fabric through, and that makes it turn the folds over perfectly. I do not know what it's called, but I'm sure someone else will.

There is a 1/4 bias maker for that size of vine. If you want smaller, you cut fabric on the bias if you want to curve it. I fold the narrow piece cut in half and pin it to the shape you want and hand sew the vine through both layers along the line drawn on the background. I then trim with my appliqué scissors close to the line sewn and then fold the bias strip over the sewing line and raw edges and use an invisible appliqué to stitch down the fold being careful that the raw edges are covered. Anything narrower, I embroider on.

Grace, I sent you a PM. Last summer I bought a large amount of fabric from an estate sale and in those boxes I found a number of completed strips of exactly this sort of thing -- exactly the same sort of thing I will never myself use!

There is probably a class on Blueprint/Craftsy how to make and sew the thin strips for applique. I use the Appliquick method myself. The tools are expensive but I have perfectly appliqued strips either hand sewn or machine.

But you don't have to spring for her expensive heat resistant plastic thingys. They are simply heat resistant wire ties that you can get in assorted widths for making the bias tubes. You can pick them up at any auto supply store like NAPA or Advance Auto, I suspect Harbor Freight has them too.

I cut bias strips and use the Clover. Ias strip maker.. available in 1/4”, 1/2”,etc. available
Ble at Joann’s and anywhere that sells Clover products.

I've tried bias bars and bias makers, but honestly I like Yoko Saito's method the best. It's the link that FelineFanatic posted above.

This is the same method I learned from Eleanor Burns many, many years ago when she was on TV. Also, did you notice her ring cutter on her thumb at 3:30 on the video? pretty nifty.
